TWENTY-THREE
Harry lay back on the settee, staring up at the ceiling. The film had been on for an hour or so but it felt like it had been days. It was a rom-com, Alex had told him, and he had started watching it with enthusiasm, God alone knew he had, but the romance part bored him and the comedy part was non-existent.
Alex sat on the settee with him, her hand automatically going into the popcorn bowl and feeding her mouth like she was a robot. Just the way popcorn eaters all over the world ate it.
Then a piece hit him on the nose.
He moved his head back before lifting it and looking at her. Alex laughed. âSorry. I was aiming for your mouth.â
He sat up. âMy mouth wasnât open.â
âStill. If it had been, that would have been a score. Sadly, it wasnât meant to be.â
He took some of the popcorn and shoved it all into his mouth, unlike his wife, who ate it one piece at a time.
âIs the film boring you?â she asked, a slight smile on her lips.
âOf course not. Iâm enjoying it.â
âLiar. But thanks for trying anyway.â
âItâs the least I could do since you made us popcorn.â
The front door opened and Jessica came in. She walked into the living room and smiled at them.
âYouâre home early,â Alex said, looking at the clock: ten past ten.
âI was tired, to be honest. It was a hard day at the nursery. Parents complaining; some not paying and falling behind. Two of the kids vomited. It was all go.â
Harry owned the nursery not far from their house in Murrayfield. He had inherited both properties from a late girlfriend, as well as her flat down near where he lived in Comely Bank.
âItâs time we had a review of the staff wages,â he said.
âOh, Harry, no, you pay more than anybody in this game,â Jessica said. âIâm not complaining about the job, honestly. Iâm just telling you I feel tired, thatâs all. Bless you, though.â
âYouâll be able to recharge your batteries over the Christmas holidays,â Harry said.
âI know. Iâm going to make a cup of hot chocolate. You want anything?â
âIâm fine, thanks,â Alex said.
âIâm okay, thanks,â Harry said.
âOkay, then.â Jessica left the living room and went to the kitchen.
âJust as well we werenât going at it on the couch,â Alex said, giggling.
âI canât even imagine.â
âWhy donât we turn off this crap film and have an early night?â Alex suggested.
âIâve got a better idea. It would involve your sister.â
Alex raised her eyebrows.
âAs a babysitter,â Harry clarified.
âGo on then, Iâm all ears.â
